Think Fast About Class!

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

Is this a Class C or a Class K fire? Older appliances often cause electrical fires, and cooking is responsible for many as well. Knowing the type of fire helps in stopping them.

Most people don't think about the differences in fires, but knowing the type of fire helps to be able to put it out faster. There are actually five classifications of fires, and they are designated according to the agent that fuels them.

Class A fires are the most common, and can be extinguished using water or foam. They involve combustible materials like paper or wood. Unlike Class A, Class B fires occur in flammable liquids, and should never have water thrown on them. Foam, powders, and carbon monoxide extinguishers work on Class B fires, which include gas, alcohol, and oils, but not cooking oils.

Water or foam actually make the next classes of fire, Class C and Class D, more dangerous. Class C fires are electrical, and require dry powder or carbon dioxide extinguishers. Class D fires are rare, and involve metals, such as you would find in a laboratory or factory, and also require dry powder to stop them.

Lastly, there is Class K, which often gets grouped into Class B, and it involves cooking oils. These should never be doused with liquids.

Always Be Aware of Your Surroundings

8/8/2022 (Permalink)

This situation caused a small fire. Extension cords can put a large power load onto a socket that isn't designed for that.

Summer is winding down, and that means fall and winter are around the corner. The winter months are the most common times for electrical fires, so it's never too early to take precautions to lower the risks. Space heaters account for a great number of electrical fires, as well as outdated appliances and wiring. It is important to pay attention to a frequently overloaded circuit breaker, or flickering lights. There should never be anyunexplained burning smells, or devices/appliances that get too hot to touch. Extension cords can be a major fire hazard, as they can create an excessive power load onto a socket. Electricians are the best solution if more outlets are needed, or anything in a home or business is questionable. Should an electrical fire start, a fire extinguisher is a great solution, but baking soda works if one isn't available.

Fire Does It's Fair Share of Damage

8/2/2022 (Permalink)

Sad pictures of a home the day after a fire. Not a total loss, this home did suffer a significant amount of damage due to fire. SERVPRO of Brandon made it "like it never even happened".

Fires are devastating. They destroy homes, lives and memories. The constant advancement of technology has helped in the battle against fires. Response times have been shortened by surveillance and alarm companies. Homes and businesses are monitored 24/7 by owners and employees via the internet. Fire systems offer immediate alerts to occupants and authorities, as well as begin some form of interventions such as foam or sprinklers. Fire extinguishers and smoke detectors are ever present, becoming as common in homes as indoor plumbing. Even detectors have greatly advanced, going from photoelectric and ionization, to dual models and beyond. All working together to stop and minimize the damage fire causes.

As much as things have advanced, there is still tragedy. There is still total loss. Some fires go beyond what can be prevented, and even when they're stopped, still leave damage in their wake. SERVPRO of Brandon is always available to their customers. Our trained technicians are ready to respond, and get life back to normal after the devastation of a fire.

Grease Is the Word

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

A kitchen is damaged during a grease fire. This homeowner had a grease fire erupt while attempting to cook some dinner,

A fire in the kitchen can happen to anyone.  The rule is never leave anything cooking unattended.  While that's a fantastic rule, fires can break out at any time, even to the most attentive chef.  Grease fires are particularly dangerous.  Grease is extremely flammable, and is dangerous all by itself when overheated.  It is important to pay close attention when slowly heating grease for cooking.  When grease is overheating, it begins to put off smoke that will get thicker and darker before it eventually ignites.

Once a grease fire has started, it is important to remember what to do.  Never fan a grease fire, or attempt to put it out with water or flour. Do turn off it's heat source, and attempt to cover it with a lid or cookie sheet to cut off it's air supply.  Baking soda or salt are effective in smothering a grease fire, and a fire extinguisher should be used as a last resort.

Nothing is as important as calling 911, and letting first responders handle the situation.  Once all is done, trust SERVPRO of Brandon to restore the home to it's former glory.  Call 601-829-2162!

Be A Professional In The Kitchen

3/9/2022 (Permalink)

A stove that was involved in a house fire. A cookbook placed on an eye that was still hot started a fire in this house.

There are so many warnings about cooking fires, and with good reason. Cooking fires rank high, if not first, on many experts'lists of causes of house fires and fire deaths. Unattended cooking being stated as the number one cause of cooking fires.

It is also important to note that cooking should be done slowly and attentively. Preparing meals is something that becomes so routine that it is easy to forget how dangerous it can actually be. It is best to limit distractions, especially when cooking with open flames, even though electric burners and ovens can ignite almost just as quickly. An open flame is very obvious when it is on or off, but electric burners can stay very hot long after they've been turned off. It is important to never try and cook under the influence of any alcohol or medications that may affect decision making skills.

If a home has been affected by a fire, let the professionals at SERVPRO of Brandon come in and make it "Like it never even happened."

'Tis The Season

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

House fire began in this fireplace. Fire damage was minimal in this home, but smoke damage was not.

A house fire can occur any time during the year, but fall and winter areconsidered peak season. The colder times of the year send people indoors, and more people indoors leads to the use of more appliances and more activity. Smoking materials, including cigarettes, pipes, and cigars were responsible for a high numberof house fires, meaning the participants didn't want to go out in the cold, but it's a particularly dangerous choice.

Winter storms can lead to outages, causing people to seek alternative sources of heat. Space heaters, ovens, and fireplaces are behind many destroyed residences, as are dryers that hadn't been cleared of lint. Candles also come out during outages, and are responsible for a high number of fires per year.

Candles also come out for another reason, and that's the holidays that roll around during the winter months. Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's are exactly the worst time to go through a fire, and yet, are the peak of fire season. Christmas lights on trees or otherwise, can lead to electrical fires. Tree fires could be the lights, or any heating source put too close to a tree, especially if it is dry. Improper handling of fireworks can also lead to problems. Last but definitely not least, is cooking. The holidays lead to a lot of cooking, and cooking causes fires. Some sources say there are three times more cooking fires on Thanksgiving Day, than any other day of the year.

Exercise fire safety all the days of the year, and call SERVPRO of Brandon if fire or smoke causes damages to your home. 601-829-2162

When A Luxury Becomes A Headache

2/3/2022 (Permalink)

This heating system caught fire. A fire caused by this heating system caused damage to three rooms, and smoke damage throughout the house.

Air and heating systems make people comfortable in their homes. No matter the weather outside, every home can be kept at the desired temperature preferred by the occupants. As much as it's a luxury, it can also be a headache.

Too often, problems arise. There is condensation in the air conditioning systems that carry dust and debris into your drain line and drip pan. These can become clogged, and send water everywhere. These systems can also be the cause of major fires in the home.

Air conditioning systems and heating systems are almost equal in the amount of home fires they cause. Faulty wiring, dirt and dust collection around the motor, clogged filter, and dry motor bearings are just a few on the issues that could potentially start a fire.

The best way to prevent this type of fire is maintenance. Always have a professional inspect air conditioning and heating systems in the home, and change filters regularly. Should preventative measures fail, call SERVPRO of Brandon at 601-829-2162, and let us take care of it.

Candle Safety!

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

Cooking is the number one cause of house fires, and candle fires don’t seem to even compare when compared. Nevertheless, in a four year time period, 20,900 house fires were attributed to candles. More than half of the candle fires reported were due to the candle being too close to combustible materials or liquids. It is vital to keep all lit candles at least 12 inches from anything that can burn. Combustible materials like curtains, paper, furniture, etc. should never be near a flame. Keep all candles where they cannot be reached by pets and children, and always extinguish candles before going to bed or leaving a room. Most importantly, always have a working smoke detectors in homes. Smoke detectors save lives.
Should a fire occur at a home or business, remember SERVPRO of Brandon can make it “Like it never even happened.” Call our fire restoration experts at 601-829-2162.

Garage Fires!

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

This garage fire started in combustable trash. This garage fire was contained in one corner of the garage. It started with combustible materials being put into the trash cans.

Garage fires do not exceed the number of kitchen fires, however, they tend to spread farther and cause much financial loss and injury. The best defense against fires anywhere in the home is always having functioning smoke detectors and fire extinguishers. The leading cause of garage fires is electrical malfunction. An action to prevent such garage fires is plugging in only one charging appliance per outlet, and never use extension cords to charge appliances. Flammable materials such as paint, oil, gasoline, propane, and varnish should be stored away from the home, in a shed or other building. Items that will burn should be stored on shelves, or away from appliances.
Fires in homes are traumatic events, it’s important to call upon professional fire restoration, such as the experts at SERVPRO of Brandon! If you’ve experienced a fire in your home call 601-829-2162!

Removal of All Smoke Particles!

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

A fire leaves behind smoke particles. SERVPRO of Brandon can remove smoke particles from structures and contents after even the worst home fires.

Dealing with loss due to a fire at a home or business can be overwhelming. Long after the fire is out, tiny particles linger and embed themselves on surfaces. Smoke particles stick to every surface, even paint. Just cleaning surfaces and airing it out won’t get rid of all the particles, and if they aren’t properly removed then a person can continuously breathe them in. It’s not just structures that are affected, but all the belongings inside a home also become covered in these particles.
The professionals at SERVPRO of Brandon were trained in “restore” verses “replace”, the mentality the SERVPRO family believes in, giving our best service to those who need us the most. Contents and structure restoration in a timely and caring manner is our specialty. We are here to help. Call us at 601-829-2162!

Protein Fires

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

No visible signs of a protein fire. You can’t see the after effects of a protein fire in this home. They aren’t visible, but the odor was loud.

At first glance, a protein fire isn’t seen.  As a matter of fact, many don’t even know what a protein fire is.  By definition, a protein fire is “smoke damage resulting from the extreme burn of protein fiber”. For example, they happen when you burn meats, eggs, or other products high in protein. Protein fires don’t always have have heavy smoke or flames.  After a protein fire, surfaces appear to need a thorough wiping down, but it is soon discovered that cleaning isn’t enough.  This is because the animal fat in protein turns into a fine, invisible mist when heated.  That mist coats everything in a sticky, rancid residue nothing is safe from.  Porous surfaces literally suck it in.

SERVPRO of Brandon knows exactly what to do after a protein fire.  Call us today at 601-829-2162, and trust us to remove all the remnants of a protein fire in your home. Our trained technicians can eliminate all residues and odors. “Like it never even happened.”

Most Household Fires Start in the Kitchen

2/22/2021 (Permalink)

A stove after a homeowner forgot about food cooking. This is the aftermath of forgotten food on the stove. Much damage can be done from such a fire, the stove and surrounding areas show the effects.

We can’t say it enough, cooking is the number one cause of house fires!  Cooking causes and average of 172,900 reported home structure fires a year, that’s in the neighborhood of 44-49 percent of all home fires reported in the U.S.

Leaving cooking food unattended, placing combustibles too close to the heat source, and unintentionally turning on or not turning off the equipment lead the list in why cooking is responsible for the most home fires.

Remember never leave your range or stove unattended while cooking, and keep your cooking area clean and free of combustible materials.  ALWAYS keep a fire extinguisher readily available.

Should the worst happen in your home, SERVPRO of Brandon will respond, and help get things back to normal again.  It’s why we say “Like it never even happened,” cause that is our goal for our customers.

Fires in Household Trash

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

The plastic can on top caught fire in the garage. While in the garage, a fire started in the top trash can, melting it , and making it trash now. Luckily, only minor damage was done to one wall.

There are many things in the home that we fear could cause a fire, but the household garbage can or outside waste bins aren’t usually the first to come to mind. Storing a trash can in the garage can be a big mistake. People have mistakenly thrown ashes from a fireplace, or rags with linseed oil on them into a garage bin, only to have a fire start where they weren’t expecting. Ashes may not always be as “cool” as they seem, and linseed oil can spontaneously combust. Other materials that should never be placed in the trash are rechargeable batteries, flammable and combustible liquids, household chemicals, or compressed gas cylinders.

Besides the danger that fire poses to the home, today’s household trash contains a lot plastics and paper treated with chemical, coatings, and ink. The smoke and ash will contain concentrated amounts of these toxic chemicals.

SERVPRO of Brandon is here to help any time day or night. Should this type of fire happen in your home, contact us and we can handle any and all of your restoration. 601-829-2162.

Did you know?

In just two minutes, a fire can become life-threatening. In five minutes, a residence can be engulfed in flames.

 Fires

  • Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be engulfed in flames.
  • Fire is HOT! Heat is more threatening than flames. Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Inhaling this super-hot air will scorch your lungs and melt clothes to your skin.
  • Fire is DARK! Fire starts bright, but quickly produces black smoke and complete darkness.
  • Fire is DEADLY! Smoke and toxic gases kill more people than flames do. Fire produces poisonous gases that make you disoriented and drowsy.

SERVPRO of Brandon is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week & 365 days a year (including holidays) for fire board-up and other emergencies. Our team makes sure your situation is handled correctly and professionally to minimize discomfort, inconvenience, and unnecessary additional costs.

Fire Damage - Smoke and Soot

8/23/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot in a Bathroom

Smoke and the Different Types

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Brandon will determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

Kitchen fire from cooking

Did you know the kitchen is where more home fires occur than anywhere else in the house and that cooking is the number one cause of home fires? Here are some really good tips for you to go by to prevent a fire in your kitchen.

  1. Never leave cooking food unattended – stay in the kitchen. If you have to leave the kitchen, even for a second, turn off the stove.
  2. Check your food regularly while cooking.
  3. Use a timer so you’ll remember that the stove or oven is on.
  4. Don’t wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
  5. Keep the kids away from the cooking area.
  6. Keep anything that can catch fire - pot holders, oven mitts, towels, etc. — away from your stove or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat.
  7. Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease buildup.
  8. Consider purchasing a fire extinguisher to keep in your kitchen.
  9. Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all stoves, ovens, and small appliances are turned off.
  10. Install smoke alarms. Use the test button to check it each month. Replace all batteries at least once a year.
