When You Can't Contain Yourself

9/7/2023 (Permalink)

A containment barrier protects the living spaces of this home. A containment barrier is set once a tree has penetrated this home during a storm.

Trees are a big threat to homes when severe weather moves through an area.  Wind, ground saturation, and health of trees all play a part in the ability to withstand a heavy storm system.  Unfortunately, about 1 out of every 10 homeowners will experience a tree falling onto their home.  Some will penetrate homes, exposing the living spaces to debris and weather.

SERVPRO of Brandon has trained professionals that know exactly what to do when a storm has damaged a home or business. Technicians can set containment barriers to separate the living areas from any more damage or exposure to after-effects of a storm system. This allows the mitigation and restoration to begin, and be thorough, without exposing the home or business to any further damage or hazards.  Call us today at 601-829-2162 if your home or business has suffered storm damage

If I Only Had A Drain......

8/10/2022 (Permalink)

This drain caused some residential flooding. This drain was stopped up from debris, and water was sent straight into the home.

When storms bring flash flooding, it is important to keep the water out of structures. Water is particularly bad when it isn't where it's supposed to be. Drains are a very important part of human design on a constantly changing, andoften surprising, planet. When roads and structures spring up, there were professionals involved who carefully made sure that water would drain away from them. Unfortunately, sometimes things go wrong, and nature may storm too quickly or too violently to control the amounts of water. Some storms settle in, and move slowly, dropping continuous moisture in one spot. Leaves, debris, and mud can clog drains that are meant to keep water away from structures, and sometimes it's just too much water too fast.

Be sure to check drains periodically, and call a professional with any drainage concerns. Call SERVPRO of Brandon if you have water where it shouldn't be! 601-829-2162

CAN'T SEE THE FOREST FOR THE TREES

8/2/2022 (Permalink)

A tree falls on a home. A tree fell on this home during a storm, and allowed the elements access to the living areas.

It's a fact that storms can cause very dangerous and damaging circumstances. Winds, hail, saturating rain, and lightning are scary, and can be very damaging to homes and businesses. Very often trees are affected by the hazards in storms, and trees that fall can cause major damage to any structure in the way.

Most trees can withstand bouts from heavy storms. Soggy soil and compromised root systems play a major part in a tree's ability to withstand a storm. Trees with "co-dominant" or V-shaped trunks also seem to be lesser able to withstand a storm's wrath. It's a good idea to get trees inspected, as there can be warning signs of a trees health.

Remember, SERVPRO of Brandon is always available should a tree allow the elements inside your home or business. Call us at 601-829-2162

There's Something In The Attic

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

Wet insulation and sheetrock crashed down. This home had ceilings in multiple rooms become wet and crash down into living spaces.

Heavy storms can cause wind and rain to become so powerful they can cause roof damage in the blink of an eye. In the midst of the storm, huge amounts of rain can come rushing inthrough that roof damage, and into a home.

Attics can be used for storage, but a lot of attics just seem like mostly empty spaces. Attics are in between the roof and the living spaces of a home, and unfortunately these spaces won't do much to stop large amounts of rainwater. They also make it hard to see some damage until it's too late. As desolate as they may seem, when the ceiling crashes down in the living space, it is then seen just how much goes into an attic space.

Besides stored belongings, sheetrock, debris, and insulation can come crashing down into a home before the inhabitants even knew there was a problem. This is also a barrier breakthat allows the outdoors and all it's water inside the living spaces.

Call us today if storm damage has had a domino effect at home, or at a business. SERVPRO of Brandon is available 24/7!

Strong Winds Take the Trees

1/31/2022 (Permalink)

Winds forced a tree into a home. No one ever wants to see a tree enter a living room, but it happens, and this home was wasn't spared.

No one is ever prepared for the damage storms can bring. Never before has there been more accurate predictions by weather professionals, and yet all that can be done won't guarantee the lack of damage. An unhealthy tree can bevictim to wind and drenched soil, and sometimes the wind and rains can overpower the oldest, healthiest trees surrounding homes and businesses.

When this happens, and the home's outer shell is penetrated, everything and everyone inside becomes vulnerable to the elements that don't belong inside. That's where SERVPRO of Brandon comes in. When the storm has subsided, and the patchwork in place, our team's work begins. With precise training in what it takes to restore homes and businesses after the most devastating of events. "Like it never even happened" .

Heavy Winds Can Cause Debris

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

Debris is blown onto a drain. A clean storm drain doesn’t stay that way when heavy winds and rain cover it with debris, leaving standing water to flow directly towards a home.

There are different types of wind associated with storms. The term straight-line wind is used to differentiate between tornadic winds and just the winds of a thunderstorm. A gust front is the leading edge of rain-cooled air about to collide with warmer air, it’s out in front of a thunderstorm. There are macrobursts (large outward bursts of strong winds), and microbursts (small concentrated downbursts). There are even derechos and haboobs. A derecho is defined as a widespread, long-lived wind storm associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. A haboob is a wall of dust pushed along the ground by a thunderstorm’s downdraft. It’s safe to say wind is unpredictable, and capable of causing damage and problems in the blink of an eye, sending water where it doesn’t need to be. Whether it’s roof damage or a drain clogged with debri, winds can lead to water damage. Call SERVPRO of Brandon today!

Storms Can Cause Unforeseen Damage

3/8/2021 (Permalink)

Exterior damage from an ice dam in the Southeast. The exterior damage to this home from an ice dam allowed for water to travel inside, leaving damage to walls, ceilings, and flooring.

Even the best preventative measures can’t always insure success in blocking damage from storms.  Especially when a region isn’t accustomed to particular weather events.  The departure from the normal, or “long-term” average weather situation can lead to a mess no one is used to.  Ice Storms can be bewildering to home and business owners who are located in generally warmer areas.

If a winter storm is on the way, preparations ideas include, but aren’t limited to: stocking up on cold-weather necessities; inspecting, prepping, and cleaning heating sources, like furnaces and fireplaces;  turning off all exterior faucets and insulating them; and checking and cleaning gutters.  The unpredictability however, still allows for the unforeseen damage that ice storms are known for.

SERVPRO of Brandon is just a call away at 601-829-2162.   Our trained technicians are ready to restore your  home or business back to where it needs to be!!  “Like it never even happened.”

storm and rain water caused water loss

Being weather ready not only allows us to respond to weather, but it allows us to be aware of what is coming, be prepared for it, and respond efficiently & safely.

Prepare your home and family for an emergency. Flood water could affect your safety and cause damage to your house as well. Keep the following tips in mind when you are anticipating severe weather.

Prepare an Evacuation Plan

The weather may become dangerous. Know where you will go and figure out multiple routes that you can take to get there. Have a plan in case you need to evacuate.

Make an Emergency Kit

If you plan to stay at home during the storm, make sure to gather emergency supplies. Flood water can contaminate your water source, so stock up on bottled water as well as canned foods. Your kit should also include flashlights and batteries in case of a power outage.

Move Important belongings

You may need to prepare in advance for a flooded building. If your house has multiple floors, move what you can to a higher level. Otherwise, place items inside cabinets or on shelves. Waterproof safes or airtight containers are great options for storing paper documents or small items.

  • Using these tips can help you get through the storm safely. However, while you may be able to prevent some damage, flood water may still find a way into your dwelling. If this happens, SERVPRO of Brandon is ready to help with your cleanup and restoration. By removing the water, sanitizing your home or business and make necessary repairs.

Storm Damage can be a water loss due to flooding in the Brandon, MS area and has devastating effects.

Flood waters can carry a lot of bacteria and other contaminates from the roadways. When floods enter a home or business it is important to have a Disaster and Restoration Company ready to respond. Anything that is porous will soak up the contaminated water. These porous items will need to be removed or cut out before the disinfecting process takes place.

Having the SERVPRO of Brandon number 601-829-2162 ready will give your home or business a leg up when there is a storm. Mitigating the damage quickly will save time and money on your storm loss.

Luckily, there is a proven and effect set of protocols for the mitigation and restoration of a property that has suffered water damage. These have been established over the course of decades and can only be carried out effectively by a professional restoration company.  It all begins with a prompt phone call to their local restoration company.

It's also important to note that a flooded home or business is a highly resolvable problem. If the restoration and mitigation efforts begin within the first five hours of the appearance of water in the home or water in the business, the chances of a successful restoration and mitigation of the damage is nearly certain. However, if the water cleanup efforts are delayed past the first 24 hours, it becomes increasingly likely that the property will sustain permanent damage.

DO NOT hesitate to call your local Mitigation and Restoration Company if your home or business encounters water damage from a storm. SERVPRO of Brandon is here to help.
